East Liberty Place South Starts Construction on Commercial Space

October 17, 2022

New commercial space will enhance the award-winning East Liberty Place South and North residential buildings.

(Pittsburgh) – The Community Builders (TCB) is pleased to announce the financial closing and start of construction for 12,000 square feet of commercial space at East Liberty Place South. Located at 5800 Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh, East Liberty Place South Commercial is located on the ground floor of a LEED certified building that is part of a larger, award-winning, TCB-developed mixed-use community of over 300 apartments, with nearly 80 percent of the units affordable.

“TCB has been active in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood for nearly two decades and we are thrilled to begin construction of the commercial phase of this flagship site,” said Juan Powell, TCB Mid-Atlantic regional vice president of development. “By activating nearly 12,000 square feet of street level commercial space, East Liberty Place South will further enliven the Penn Avenue corridor with exciting and dynamic neighborhood businesses.”

East Liberty Place North and South, developed by TCB in 2012 and 2013, have been catalysts in the revitalization of the East Liberty neighborhood. Development of the East Liberty Place South commercial space will add six retail storefronts including a bakery, a dine-in restaurant, a fast casual restaurant, and a mobile phone store. An adjacent parking lot will offer 16 dedicated spaces. Retailers are expected to open in late 2023.

The commercial space will be developed with financial support from the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh and Dollar Bank.
