Mayor Cahill and The Community Builders Welcome Partners to Celebrate Groundbreaking for Stirlingside Residences

April 4, 2024

Mixed-income apartment community will create 53 homes for families

(April 4, 2024) – New Brunswick, N.J.  – Mayor Jim Cahill joined The Community Builders (TCB), New Brunswick Housing Authority (NBHA), Middlesex County and the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA) today to celebrate the groundbreaking for Stirlingside Residences, a 53-unit affordable housing community for families in New Brunswick.

Stirlingside Residences will feature 13 three-bedroom, 30 two-bedroom and 10 one-bedroom apartments, with six homes set aside for families and individuals who have previously experienced homelessness. Building amenities will include a community room, fitness room, bicycle storage, laundry area and on-site property management. The environmentally friendly development is designed to achieve ENERGY STAR and Enterprise Green Communities (EGC) certifications. The apartment community will be located within close proximity to downtown New Brunswick, a walkable, urban area with excellent access to transit, employment, and retail.

“This groundbreaking occasion highlights our city’s unwavering commitment to providing affordable housing for our residents, particularly those with low and moderate incomes,” said New Brunswick Mayor Jim Cahill. “The addition of Stirlingside Residences not only increases our availability of affordable housing, but also boosts our city’s economy by creating jobs and supporting local businesses. This project reflects our dedication to sustainable urban development and our goal of maintaining New Brunswick as an attractive place to live, work, and thrive.”

With over 25 years of experience in New Brunswick, TCB was designated as developer for the city’s HOPE VI Revitalization Plan by the Housing Authority in 1998. Since then, TCB has successful developed 191 homes across three phases in downtown New Brunswick, including Hope Manor Apartments, Riverside Apartments, and Lord Stirling Apartments.

“For over three decades, it has been an honor to work with our partners in government and at NBHA to advance housing equity in the City of New Brunswick,” said Jesse Batus, TCB NY/NJ regional vice president of development. “Today, we redouble and strengthen our commitment to the city by breaking ground on 53 new affordable homes for residents to live and thrive in their community. On behalf of The Community Builders, I extend my deepest thanks and a well-earned congratulations to Mayor Cahill, the NJHMFA, and the many partners, stakeholders, and neighbors who are making this development possible.”

“Today’s groundbreaking for Stirlingside Residences is a major step toward producing much needed affordable housing for the New Brunswick community,” said NJHMFA Executive Director Melanie R. Walter. “This project has been in the works for years, so the Agency allocated an additional $3.5 million to help to overcome COVID-19 related financial and practical challenges that impeded this important 9% Low-Income Housing Tax Credit project’s completion. This project is a major step toward ensuring that New Brunswick families will each have a safe, clean and modern place to call home.”

“Affordable housing is the foundation of community development. By ensuring access to affordable housing, we meet a fundamental human need while fostering stability, opportunity, and economic growth for all. Our PHA is dedicated to collaborating with and within the communities we serve to create these opportunities. The work we do together can make a real difference,” said Zach Michael Wright, Chair, New Brunswick Housing and Redevelopment Authority.

“Funding and providing accessible and affordable housing options for our residents is essential to improving our quality of life,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios. “Projects like Stirlingside Residences address the immediate housing needs in an ever-changing economy, and I commend Mayor Cahill and our partners for making this a reality. We are laying the foundation for a stronger and more equitable community for future generations to succeed.”

The development of Stirlingside Residences is made possible through funding provided by NJHMFA, Middlesex County, City of New Brunswick, New Brunswick Housing Authority, CPC Mortgage Company, Raymond James, Santander, The Reinvestment Fund and New Jersey Community Capital. Pike Construction Services will lead construction with design by Inglese Architecture + Engineering.
