The Community Builders help young children grow and thrive at home. In Boston, our Healthy Wealthy Wise program provides picture books, developmental toys and educational activities for families with children under age five. In partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital, TCB Community Life navigators empower families with the learning tools, household supplies and economic coaching they need to maintain a healthy, stable home.

Investment Highlight: Altgeld Family Resource Center, Chicago, IL
This new 40,000 square foot multi-use facility developed by TCB will provide a public library, child care center, and community meeting spaces improving non-residential services and amenities within the Altgeld Gardens/Murray Homes community. This project is the final phase of the Chicago Housing Authority’s community master planning effort for the Altgeld/Murray community. It will enhance the community amenities for the residents ensuring access to opportunities that lead to self-sufficiency and success.

Best Mixed-Use Development: Aurora Arts Center
Named the 2020 Best Mixed-Use Development by Multifamily Executive, the John C. Dunham Aurora Arts Center connects a performing arts school, a restaurant and 38 new affordable apartments in Aurora, IL. TCB partnered with the city of Aurora and the Paramount Theatre to transform the 80,000 square foot development into the arts center that expands the community’s cultural and artistic offerings.
Readers’ Choice for Mixed-Use Development: Avondale Town Center
The Avondale Town Center, located in Cincinnati, OH, was named 2020 Readers’ Choice Mixed-Use Development by Affordable Housing Finance. The center brings together 119 mixed-income apartments and 76,000 square feet of commercial and retail space including a health center, a market and the community’s first laundromat. TCB partnered with the Avondale Development Corp. and the Avondale Coalition of Churches to create this multi-use development for the Avondale community.
Affordable Housing Hall of Fame: Bev Bates
Bev Bates was inducted into the Affordable Housing Hall of Fame in 2020. A highly regarded innovator, Bev retired from The Community Builders in 2020 as executive vice president of real estate development. For over 30 years, Bev was a centerpiece of TCB’s growth and development. She led development of more than 20,000 affordable homes for families, seniors and adults with disabilities. Her legacy also includes the numerous talented community development leaders she attracted and mentored.
Best in American Living: Villas at the Ridgeway
Villas at the Ridgeway was recognized by the National Association of Home Builders with the 2020 Best in American Living Award for Affordable, Multifamily Mid to High Rise developments. Located in Yonkers, NY, this community features 70 modern townhomes for families of all incomes, just steps away from public transit. The Villas are part of a multi-phase redevelopment in partnership with the Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers.
